U3A

U3A stands for the University of the Third Age. It is a global self-help organisation for older people no longer in full-time paid employment.

Individuals meet with others in a variety of interest groups to learn new things by sharing knowledge, skills and experience.

Teign U3A centred on Newton Abbot has around 200 members at present and runs over 30 Interest Groups – catering for all tastes – some physical (Walking), some creative (Painting & Photography) and others mental (Computer Tuition and Science Discussion) and a lot in between. All are good fun and provide great education and stimulus (for the educators as well as for the ‘students’). The following groups meet monthly at Ogwell Memorial Hall on Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoons.

Armchair Travel Jazz
Bridge Mah-Jong
Computer Tuition Music Appreciation
Family History Painting
French Conversation Photography
Gardening Science Discussion
Hand Chimes Scrabble
History

Other groups meet in members’ homes.

There is also a monthly meeting on the 4th Thursday of each month at The Avenue Church Hall, The Avenue, Newton Abbot TQ12 2BY. The doors open at 2:15pm a guest speaker is followed by a chat over tea or coffee. Guests are welcome.
